Marc Chagall - David Mourning Absalom
This lovely original lithograph is from the Bible series, 1956, and is one of the unsigned impressions. Reference Mourlot #134

The illustrations for the Bible were commissioned in 1930 by Vollard, a Paris art dealer, and started on a trip to Palestine. World War II interrupted the work, which was finally completed in France in the early 1950s. The first lithographs, printed by the great French lithographers Mourlot Frères, were published in 1956. Chagall produced 16 full color lithographs, and 12 in black and white. A total of 6,500 unsigned impressions were produced. as well as a separate edition of 75 copies of the full colour lithographs which were signed and numbered  on Arches paper. All the black and the white lithographs were also printed in an edition of 75 copies on the Arches paper, but only 5 of these were signed and numbered.

The 1956 series was met with such high acclaim that Chagall made a further set, which was published in 1960. There was a total of 24 full colour Original Lithographs produced for the 1960 series. 6500 unsigned impressions were made, however only 50 signed and numbered copies were produced, as well as 10 proofs which were not for sale.
